fannish love from a flower of sin

DreamHost needs to change it's name…

This is the most unbelievable and outrageous thing. As seen on Digg and DreamHost’s blog because of one idiot running a script for too long, thousands of customers were billed for the entire year of 2008 to the tune of hundreds of dollars, and for some thousands depending on what kind of account they had. Some people got billed for more than one year in advance. Yes, they charged me too. No, I’m not happy about this. How is it that this company had no check points in place to prevent this kind of thing from happening? How is it that one person’s mistake can cost thousands of customers money? If you check out the comments on Digg and DH’s blog, you’ll see that many people’s bank accounts are being overdrawn because they had automatic payments set up, some in danger of having mortgage payments & other important checks bounce. Lucky for me, I make manual payments and had turned automatic ones off some time ago.

This morning, I got a bill in my inbox for a few hundred dollars of overcharge for domain registrations and hosting for the future year of 2008. When I saw the email, I was in shock and tried to get to the user panel only to find it unavailable. I responded to the billing email as instructed only to have it bounce back. I checked their status blog and found out that 6 hours before, the error had been made and noted with the claim ‘we’re working on it’ and a bonus ‘sorry for your inconvenience.’ It’s nice how they didn’t send an email out telling people about the problem that they knew about for hours when they knew people were and would be getting emails about paying the erroneous charges. It’s so nice that customers have to dig and discover what’s going on for themselves and whether or not it will be resolved. Great customer service, guys! You totally rock! And by ‘rock’ I mean you can choke on ten cocks for all I care, bonus points for a good anal reaming.

This is beyond unacceptable. I liked DreamHost because what features you received seemed to be a good buy for the money. If this is the kind of thing that is going to occur with them, I don’t want any parts of it. This whole situation is basically a company stealing money from people’s bank accounts and saying “oh, sorry!” in response. Even if it’s in error, this is going to incur bank fees for people with overdrawn accounts I’m going to be looking into alternatives for web hosting fairly soon. And to think I used to recommend this company to my friends as a good web host!
