fannish love from a flower of sin
Speed Grapher is the latest anime that has caught my attention. This one is for more mature audiences – no cutesy stuff to be found here. It takes place against the backdrop of a not so distant future where lives are bought and sold at the drop of a hat. I love it. It’s beautiful in its depravity, showing the rich engaging in debauchery in an underground club whose patrons are much more than they seem. A photographer ends up getting caught up in the ensuing intrigue. Though he’s the main character (and I suppose the hero) of the tale, my favorite character is the main villian, Suitengu. You have to love a man who wears a fur-lined pimp coat and smokes cigarettes rolled in yen. He also has the wonderful ability to be able to manipulate his blood for defense or offense, piercing his enemies and sometimes shredding them ala killer floss. He can also make wings of blood and fly. Yes, he’s that awesome. And he’s voiced by my favorite seiyuu Toshiyuki Morikawa (most characters I am enamored with are). The dub is good as well, which they’ve started showing on IFC recently.
