fannish love from a flower of sin
Well, it’s basically old news now, but LiveJournal has had its latest explosion of discontent over the removal of the basic account and also of certain searchable interests, both of which were done in a sneaky way. This seems to be leading to the latest exodus to other venues and/or straddling the fence between them and LJ, with IJ being the main place people are looking to with the death knell tolling on GreatestJournal. Well, so many people who couldn’t have cared less about the Strikethrough and Boldout fiascos are suddenly up in arms because LJ’s less than stellar management affects them now. Go figure.
For my part, the only reason that I’m on journaling services other than my WordPress is the fandom interaction. I mean, if all you want to do is blog, there are dozens of places that you can do so, your own server being ideal since you have the most freedom there. But I do enjoy looking at various fanworks and whatnot. I’ll always have a LJ since the majority of the fandoms that I still have an interest in have the highest presence there. While the fandom presence on IJ is growing, most of the fandoms I love have barely made a dent. A fandom that has several coms with thousands of members on LJ has one main asylum on IJ with under 20 members. And some people wonder why and/or complain about users who still stay on LJ or straddle the fence. To me, a journaling service serves a function. I see it as neither a lifestyle nor something to fangirl over. If the service becomes intolerable, leave it behind. If there are aspects that still suit you, use it. That’s not to undermine people’s indignation over what’s going on, but it’s a business and LJ Inc. is within its rights to run it the way they like, even if it’s distasteful to some. I think the problem is that many users have forgotten that LJ hasn’t been some community of bloggers for bloggers for a long time, if it ever really was.
