Who thought it would be a good idea to have the Doctor look like a Capt. Jack Sparrow clone? (Have I told anyone how much I hate pirates? No? I effing hate them.) Thank goodness Smith had a love for Tomb of the Cybermen & the second Doctor and made them change to his current outfit. Ah, Tomb of the Cybermen. A good story with lulzy but cringe-worthy moments. Like some of the the bad accents, the asshole American, and personal fave, the tall black manservant of the creepy evil woman who wore pants tight enough to show off his ass and package (Yes, evil lady with a German-esque accent, we know what he’s really for). Who hardly had any lines and walked around looking big and imposing for the most part. (‘I think here’s a gentleman who could open these doors for us.’ Yes, Doctor, ask the big, strong black man to pry the doors open for you. Oh, the ’60s.) But hey, Toby Toberman saved the day by the end of the serial, so that’s something. And it was also the ep that gave us this, so I can’t hate on it too much:

I liked it every bit as much as I did Band of Brothers. It’s definitely one for the DVD collection. I was able to get the two books it was based on in ebook format – Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie and With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge, so I’ve got a bit something more to read on ye old iPod Touch. Speaking of which, I liberated the thing recently to get more functionality out of it (not waiting for OS 4 to get the folder function that should have been on the device in the first place among other things). Okay, also so that I could get a custom look, but who’s counting. Off to rewatch a few eps. Or to write fic, possibly both.

I used to be a big fan of Palm OS devices. I’ve always had one ever since the era of green screen handhelds. But then Palm decided to ditch the handheld market and I became a sad puppy with an older device and a refusal to switch to a smartphone (I like my phone and handheld separated for various reasons, tyvm). My old Palm still works, but battery life and unupdated apps were an issue. In stepped the iPod Touch. At first, I thought it was mostly fluff judging by the way it’s advertised as a device for fun fun FUN! Since I already had a video mp3 player of a different brand, I didn’t see much need to make a switch. But when I took a good look, the iPod Touch is a fairly versatile device that can be used for work as well as play, depending on what kind of apps you use. And the built-in wifi really makes it worthwhile. No more lugging a big laptop around to get use out of the intarwebs when I’m out and about.

I’m just going to mention a few of my essential apps on Senekisu (yes, I named it – wut?). Where productivity is concerned, I was glad to see that Documents to Go made a version for iPhone & iPod Touch. I’ve had that app on just about every Palm device I owned, so I was glad I could continue to use it as a document viewer & editor. As far as organizers go, I wasn’t thrilled with what Agendus put out for this device. I’m trying to decide between upgrading Pocket Informant or using one of a few others instead.

If you are a comic or manga fan, ComicZeal is the app you need to own. It’s worth the low cost if you want to read your manga or comic scans on the go or comfortably at home. The free desktop app that you can get at their site allows for quick and easy conversion of your content. It’s great for artbook scans as well. You might also want to check out the free Crunchyroll app in the iTunes store if you like watching anime – a nice amount of free content there. I’m debating whether or not to use the new Anime Network app to watch shows. I think I’ll hold out for whatever Funimation has coming out soon.

Where ebook (and fic) reading is concerned, I haven’t found a better reader than Stanza. You can easily load your own content on the device or search for free or paid ebooks from various sites with it. Coupled with Calibre (free) or Stanza Desktop (also free) you can convert any type of ebook you have on your computer for easy reading.

Social networking & blogging on the go is a breeze on this thing, too. There are various Twitter apps (my fave is Twitterific) facebook apps (I’ll never touch that place, though, for various reasons) and useful WordPress apps. There’s even an app for LJ. Wish there were plans by someone to make a Dreamwidth app, but no dice. I’ll just have to keep visiting via the web browser.

While I’m not using this device for the gaming options much since I’ve got a DS lite, I do have a couple of things on there if I need to randomly pass the time when the DS is at home. They’ve got a version of Assassin’s creed (yay!) and Cooking Mama (nice contrast, huh?) so I’m a happy camper. I’ve also become addicted to Battle Bears, a game where you are a teddy bear who must destroy adorable pastel-colored bears out to hug you to death.

Overall, I was less than impressed despite the number of people who raved about how awesome and poignant it was. I had hope for it based on the reactions of others who saw it before I did, but those crumbled as fast as the interior of the TARDIS did at the end of the second episode. It was overblown melodrama even by RTD standards. There was OOC behavior, plot points that didn’t make sense and pairings out of nowhere. And how long did it take Ten to regenerate anyway? It also felt at some points that the writer was channeling some of his own feelings through the characters. Not like that’s ever happened in Nu!Who before. How this two-parter turned out makes me glad it’s all over, which is the sad thing. There were things that I enjoyed about Ten’s run as Doctor, but the last of the specials kind of ruined a lot of Nu!Who for me. I always was a Classic Who sort of gal anyway, but it’s still disappointing. And I’m not so sure about how Eleven is going to be. Let’s hope his behavior was just a bout of post-regeneration psychosis and that the guy mellows out a bit.
